New Revelations from Zion: the Archaeology of Jerusalem from the Great Age of Reform In the last 25 years, intensive construction has revolutionized our understanding of Jerusalem’s transition from a royal capital to a metropolis in the kingdom of Judah, mostly around and after the Ten Tribes of Israel were deported. The lecture reviews the unexpected monumental buildings and massive storage facilities that offer physical evidence of the city’s transformation, just as a self-conscious theological monotheism comes to expression as a national policy and identity. Prof. Yuval Gadot is Head of the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures at Tel-Aviv University and visiting professor of archaeology at the University of California, San Diego. He has earned international distinction as a principal in excavations for almost thirty years, most recently in Jerusalem and its surroundings, and the city of Azekah. He has also worked extensively on historical landscapes, both from an etic socioeconomic perspective and as a source of the sacred, two givens behind Israelite religions and the vicissitudes of their iconic city.
